Pocket Guide: New Jersey

For such a small state, New Jersey sure manages to pack a lot in. Experience a classic beach town or visit a quaint, old-time village hidden away at the end of winding roads. Get involved in the state’s exciting urban life and check out long stretches of rural farmland, all within a few hours' drive of each other. Most people who have never been to New Jersey think they know what it's like, thanks to movies and TV shows. Yet visitors are sure to be surprised by the real deal.

The state of New Jersey is made up of two part, with the southern half being mainly influenced by Philadelphia while the north is more New York. The famous New Jersey Shore runs along the entire shoreline, taking in both parts. It’s a world unto itself, the New Jersey Shore, with its cottages, mansions, seafood places and custard stands. You’ll find plenty of great New Jersey hotel packages in beach towns like Ocean City, Cape May, Asbury Park, and Wildwood. Summer is the best time to visit the Shore, if you want to get involved in a few parties, but if you book rooms during the colder seasons, you're likely to be offered special rates and great discounts. If you plan to visit with the crowds, however, book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

There are plenty of cheap hotel deals in Atlantic City, with its massive casino industry, which draws in millions of tourists and is an excellent place to start. It’s the top gambling destination on the American East Coast with over a dozen casinos and thousands of hotel rooms. It won’t be hard to find great hotel deals in Atlantic City’s casino hotels, with meals and gambling tokens often included as part of the deal.

Not into gambling? Head down to Cape May, which is known for its gorgeous Victorian architecture and it calls itself "The Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort." Things are a little more expensive around here, but deals are still available. It’s best to visit early or late in the summer or during off-season. Cape May is also renowned for its concern for eco-tourism, and bird-watching and whale watching are popular activities.

New Jersey can boast a great many other attractions as well. The Delaware Water Gap Recreation area is a great place to go canoeing and picnicking. Visit the Meadowlands race track and the Palisades along the Hudson, where Aaron Burr killed President Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Hotels in New Jersey are plentiful with a range of price points. If you want a cheap New Jersey hotel deal, a little research should uncover excellent bargains.
