Dusseldorf is a cosmopolitan city with two faces: a stroll through the picturesque Altstadt (Old Town) throws you back to the Middle Ages, while the Media Harbour with its modern architecture, trendy clubs and restaurants is über-modern. Whether you’re looking for history, culture, a romantic break or a night out on the town, Dusseldorf can deliver.
In the city centre you’ll find the busiest shopping street in Dusseldorf: the Schadowstrasse. If you’re looking for a little retail therapy in Dusseldorf then you’ll want to mark this on your map. If you’re looking for luxury shopping and only the biggest brands then you’ll want the Konigsallee (also known as "the Kö"). This road, divided in two by a canal, is known for its exclusive shops, the German equivalent of Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive.
Just west of centre is the Old Town, also known as Germany’s “longest bar”. That’s not because there’s just one long bar running through the streets, but rather because of the enormous number of pubs that line the streets. In fact, it’s one of the highest concentrations of bars in all of Europe. Make sure you try the Altbier, which is a local specialty.
Living up to its name, you’ll also find old buildings like the Lieferhaus (1288), Dusseldorf's oldest house, and the St. Lambert (1394), which has a twisted church tower, in the Old Town. Other attractions include the Kunsthalle and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen.
In the northern part of the centre you can explore the lush greenery of the Hofgarten, one of the most beautiful parks in the city. Relax and enjoy the large lake, sculptures and fountains.
There’s also plenty of entertainment just north of the centre, with two specialty theatres: NEMO Pantomime (with mimes) and the Dusseldorf Puppet Theatre.
Finally, there’s the Rhine Tower. This 240 meter high tower has an observation deck, offering incredible views over the region and a revolving restaurant.
