Understand the creative mind of one of Mexico’s most well-known artists when you explore her home from childhood through adulthood.

Visit the Museo Frida Kahlo, also known as La Casa Azul, the Blue House where artist Frida Kahlo was born. She lived and created here for her entire life, sometimes joined by her husband Diego Rivera. Here you’ll see Frida’s intimate world, with colorful and whimsical possessions that inspired her art and reflected her lifestyle.

Frida Kahlo is one of Mexico’s most famous female painters. She lived for only 47 years but created more than 200 significant works of art, many of them self-portraits. Her style has been described by various art experts as folk art or surrealism and often contains bold colors, primitive patterns and elements of feminism. Although she was not appreciated as an artist during her lifetime, she has become famous in recent decades. Judge the work for yourself as you visit this popular museum.

Tour the home to see Kahlo’s dining room, kitchen, study, bedrooms and gardens. Temporary exhibits may include some of the artist’s clothing, photos and other family memorabilia.

The museum has a limited number of the artist’s important works including Frida and the Cesarean Section and Portrait of My Father Wilhelm Kahlo. Appreciate the colorful watermelons of Viva la Vida, the last painting that Frida Kahlo signed before her death in 1954. To see additional original Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera pieces, travel to Xochimilco to tour the Dolores Olmedo Museum.

Find the Frida Kahlo Museum or La Casa Azul in Mexico City’s southwestern Coyoacán neighborhood. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. Prices are higher on weekends and include discounts for students, seniors and children. Purchase tickets online to minimize the wait at the door, since this is one of the most popular tourist spots in the city. Arrange a guided tour in English of the house and collections in advance. The tour includes the historical setting of Mexico during Frida’s lifetime. Use your ticket to gain admission to the Diego Rivera Museum located nearby.
