From ornate palaces and bathhouses to enchanting vineyards and sparkling lakes, this central European nation has everything necessary for an incredible holiday.

Discover Hungary, a distinctive country known for its grand architecture, sumptuous bathhouses and indulgent cuisine. If you’re looking to unwind, you will find plenty of spas and hot springs. And if you’re searching for thrills, rugged trails and grand palaces provide ample adventure.

Hungary was first settled by nomadic people who later adopted the Catholic religion. Today, the country retains both splendid imperial architecture as well as the stark remains of Communist era buildings.

Delight in the beauty of the capital city, Budapest, where you can relax in the hot springs and take a tour of ornate government buildings. Wander the exhibits of the National Gallery and the History Museum within the magnificent Royal Palace. Take a stroll along the bridges over the Danube River. Margaret Island in the middle of the river features medieval ruins, a small zoo and outdoor pools.

Oenophiles should take a journey north to one of Hungary’s premier wine regions, Tokaj-Hegyalja. This area around Tokaj mountain produces wonderful, high-quality wines. Visit the small town of Eger to soak in its thermal baths. In Aggtelek, explore an extensive cave system featuring stalactites and stalagmites.

For outdoor adventure, head to Lake Balaton to sail on its smooth waters and go paddle boating near the shore. The country trails of Badacsony, many of which lead to local wine cellars, are also worth exploring. On the western side of the lake is the wetland area of Little Balaton, a prime spot for bird-watching.

To enter Hungary, fly into Franz Liszt International Airport Budapest. From the terminals, ride the train to downtown Budapest. If you’re travelling in Budapest, make use of the efficient public transportation system, which includes a subway and regularly scheduled buses.

Come in June or July for warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. If you’re happy to spend time indoors and don’t mind a bit of rain, the winter is a lovely time to come, with lower accommodation prices and lots of twinkling Christmas lights.

Discover a different side to Europe in Hungary, where ornate architecture and distinctive local dishes, such as goulash, await.
