Pocket Guide: Lahinch

The coastal town of Lahinch in County Clare is perfect for those of you looking a seaside break with lots to offer. Spending time by the beach is one of the biggest draws for visitors to Lahinch, with some 2km of golden sand waiting for you in the picturesque Liscannor Bay. Lahinch has also earned a reputation in recent years as one of Ireland’s top surfing destinations, with the waves suitable for all abilities, from novice to expert. There are several surfing schools to help introduce you to surfing when in Lahinch, while you can also try your hand at kayaking, archery and rock climbing while visiting the town.

Things to Do in Lahinch

While relaxing on the beach and trying your hand at surfing can be a draw for many, there’s much more to Lahinch than crashing waves and golden sand. The main street has a variety of boutique and souvenir shops, while pubs and cafes are plentiful in the area. The town has a famed nightlife, with traditional music sessions particularly popular during the summer months. The town is also home to one of Ireland’s most stunning links courses, with Lahinch Golf Club providing a challenging round for even the most seasoned campaigner. Dough Castle, which overlooks the golf course, is also worth checking out, providing great views along the Clare coastline.

Exploring County Clare

Lahinch has you well placed to explore the County Clare coast, with the Cliffs of Moher and Burren Geopark to the north, and the picturesque Hook Head Peninsula to the south. One of Ireland’s most-visited tourist attractions, the Cliffs of Moher, is a must see when visiting Lahinch, and these lie 10km from the town. Marvel at these impressive cliffs, and be sure to make the trek to O’Brien’s Tower and grab a photo memory from one of the most iconic towers in Ireland.

A short drive from the Cliffs of Moher is the village of Doolin, the traditional music capital of Ireland. From walking tours along the cliffs to boat trips to the Aran Islands, Doolin is another place to be sure to visit as you explore Lahinch and the surrounding area. While in Doolin, stop by Doolin Caves, and if you want to do more cave exploration, Aillwee Cave is a 40-minute drive from Lahinch.

The Burren National Park is another must-see area and is an environment dominated by a limestone landscape and unlike any other place in Ireland. A drive through the winding roads of the park will deliver countless memories, with Poulnabrone Dolmen, Flaggy Shore and the Lisdoonvarna Spa Wells all worth visiting. Make your way towards the village of Kilnaboy and onwards to Cloon where you will come face to face with the iconic home of Father Ted. Indeed, much of the hit TV show was shot in Clare, so join a tour with Ted Tours and take in some of the most famous sites from the adventures of Ted, Dougal, Jack and Mrs Doyle.
