Photograph this artfully constructed bridge, one of the longest steel single-span arch structures in the world.

The New River Gorge Bridge spans the New River, ironically one of the continent’s oldest rivers. Passers-by regularly stop to photograph this iconic structure, which is perhaps best known for being featured on the U.S. Mint-issued West Virginia state quarter. Paddle under the bridge on a boat, make the hair-raising drive across it by car, enjoy views from the safety of nearby trails or embark on a guided tour across the catwalk.

Construction began in 1974 and the structure was completed in 1977. The bridge, which serves only vehicular traffic, vastly reduced the journey time for cars crossing the New River. Note the bridge’s uncoated finish this is weathering steel, a corrosion-resistant material which requires no painting.

From afar, marvel at the scale of this massive bridge, which stands 876 feet (267 meters) above the rushing rapids. The arch spans an astonishing 1,700 feet (520 meters). Find several good lookout spots in the area. Follow the easy paths from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center which lead to observation decks. Hike all the way to the bottom for superb views looking back up at the bridge. The bridge and backdrop are particularly photogenic at sunset.

Another popular way to see the bridge is from the water. Kayak or cruise along the river and gaze up at the underside from below. Alternatively, sign up for a daily guided bridge walk across the catwalk, an elevated pathway under the bridge. Before embarking, get ready for adventure. The plunging views all the way down to the river below are not for the fainthearted. Get another good view of the bridge by driving down Fayette Station Road.

Arrive on the annual Bridge Day and stand on the riverbanks as daredevil B.A.S.E. jumpers fling themselves off the edge and into the ravine. This one October day is the only time during the year when jumping is legal. It’s also the only time when pedestrians can walk across the bridge. Enjoy the Bridge Day chili cook-off.

Find the New River Gorge Bridge just north of Fayetteville in West Virginia. Park at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center.
