Theatre Royal, Newcastle-upon-Tyne dates back to 1837. Recognize it by its imposing columns and large pediment. The theater hosts a variety of shows, ranging from ballet and contemporary dance to dramatic performances and opera. Take a guided tour of the theater with a docent to venture backstage and learn about the famous actors who have performed here.

Attend one of the 400 performances each year. The theater welcomes acts from the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, among others. Bring the kids to the pantomime acts during the Christmas period so they can get involved in the action.

Peruse the intriguing permanent exhibit on the Story of Theatre. It elucidates the history of dramatic performances, from Ancient Greece to present day. See costumes from the 1930s and a wooden scale replica of the Quayside area that held medieval plays.

Enjoy a traditional British afternoon tea, consisting of smoked salmon sandwiches and hot drinks in the majestic Olivier Suite.

Learn the history of this cornerstone of Newcastle. Its opening performance at this location in 1837 was William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. Hear about how a fire broke out after a Macbeth performance in 1899 and destroyed the building, which was rebuilt in 1901.

Book tickets online, by phone or in person at the box office. It is open Monday to Saturday from morning to evening and Sundays prior to performances. Check for discounts for kids and toddlers.
