Ride a historic funicular railway up the side of a mountain for stunning views of the pilgrimage town of Lourdes, framed by the Pyrenees.

Picturesque Lourdes is a historic town ensconced by the Pyrenees and one of the best ways to see it in its context is from the top of Pic du Jer. Ride to the top of the mountain on a charming old funicular railway. Once you are there, follow walking trails and find an observatory for panoramic views of this stunning corner of France. Make sure you bring your camera to the top of the peak so you can capture memories of this special place.

Marvel at the still-functional funicular railway that takes you to the top of Pic du Jer. This engineering achievement is well over 100 years old, as it was completed in 1900, but it still trundles to the altitude of 3,050 feet (930 meters) every day. Watch as it crosses over the stone arches of a bridge and admire the views on this pleasant journey.

Alternatively, hike up the slopes instead of taking the train. Bring lots of water and food for this 3-hour trek.

Disembark the train and explore the area. A restaurant offers food with a view, while walking trails promise several different places to admire the scenery. Seek out the grottos hidden in the mountainside. Consider taking a guided tour through these glacial caves.

Hike from the upper level funicular station to the top of Pic du Jer at a height of 3,280 feet (1,000 meters). Here, stop in the observatory for expansive views of the Pyrenees. Look through the binoculars to see Pic du Midi, Tarbes and other nearby destinations.

Spot Pic du Jer from ground level by looking up to the mountain. The peak is recognizable for its large cross, which is illuminated after sundown.

The funicular railway runs up Pic du Jer over a dozen times a day, although it closes during the winter months. Reach the base of the mountain by walking for 30 minutes from the Lourdes train station through the town center. From there, board the railway to reach the top of the peak. Metered parking is available near the funicular station.
