A gateway to the rest of the city, this bustling square in Bordeaux's student quarter is home to classical monuments and stylish restaurants.

Like Place Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Place de la Victoire features an arch monument and has roads leading off in every direction toward other city neighborhoods. Unlike its bigger counterpart, however, Bordeaux's cool plaza is not swamped with tourists. The laid-back atmosphere here makes it an ideal place to linger a while. Rest from sightseeing at one of the square’s cafés and bars and watch people coming and going.

Look for the marble column in the center, which celebrates Bordeaux’s wine production heritage. The unique pillar twists like a vine and uses red stone from the Languedoc region to represent Bordeaux's renowned wines. Take a seat on the bronze tortoise next to the obelisk.

The square's other notable monument is the Porte d'Aquitaine, a stone arch dating back to 1753. Examine the reliefs depicting sea gods. Cross through the arch to enter the famous Rue Sainte-Catherine, which runs past the Aquitaine Museum up to the Bordeaux National Opera.

Stop to admire the a building that belongs to the University of Bordeaux on the eastern edge of the square. The classical-style façade features Ionic columns and busts of scientists. Two statues representing nature and science welcome visitors to its entrance.

Taste some of the region's well-regarded wine in one of the restaurants on the square, which range from casual cafés and bars to fine-dining establishments. On warm evenings, patrons often sit outside and enjoy drinks as the sun sets. You’ll find several banks and hotels around the plaza too.

Open-air live music events are occasionally held in the square, as are local markets. Check to see if any of the surrounding cafés are hosting music nights during your stay.

Take a tram or bus to Victoire stop to reach Place de la Victoire. The square is less than 10 minutes away on foot from other major attractions in the city, such as the Grosse Cloche.
