Stuttgart and its environs offer a wide range of hotel, B&B and hostel options to cater to every type of traveller. There is a large selection of places to stay in Stuttgart city centre, grouped around the central parks and plazas and the Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station. Travel a little way out to find further accommodation in Ludwigsburg to the north, Sindelfingen to the southwest, Fellbach and Esslingen to the east, and Filderstadt around Stuttgart Airport to the south.
The area to the north of Stuttgart was once a royal hunting ground, which the Dukes of Württemberg developed into a grand palace surrounded by a Baroque town. Now Ludwigsburg town, Ludwigsburg Palace and its estates are the prime draw for visitors, but the pretty Marktplatz and the lakeside tranquillity of the Seeschloss Monrepos are both well worth a visit.
The southwestern satellite town of Sindelfingen is best known for its vast Mercedes-Benz factory, and a tour of the state-of-the-art production process will interest most visitors, motor buffs or not. English language tours are available once a day, so make sure you book in advance. Also in Sindelfingen, youngsters will find plenty to do at Sensapolis, an indoor playground and activity centre with climbing walls, a space ship and a fantasy castle.
Fellbach is a mid-sized town to the northeast of Stuttgart. Visitors should check out the F3 Familien und Freizeitbad, a water park with indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, a whirlpool and sauna. TobiDu is an indoor children’s adventure playground with jungle gyms, slides and a mini go-kart circuit.
Stuttgart’s eastern district of Esslingen has an attractive Medieval town centre which hosts a popular Christmas market. Visitors can experience Esslingen’s other attractions at any time of year – the pretty castles of Esslinger Burg with its vineyards, and Burg Teck with its pleasant park.
Filderstadt spreads south from Stuttgart Airport, a modern amalgamation of five historic villages. Fildorado is a popular water activity centre with its Live Room Escape adventure, and Filderstadt’s Uhlbergturm is a tower offering views of the Swabian Alps.
