Tullamore is spilling over with excellent sights and attractions, most of which are within easy walking distance to one another.
A wander along Tullamore’s canal will spoil you with many wonderful experiences. This includes Tullamore Distillery, established in 1829; this stunning building is set along the canal and invites visitors into its historic building for a tour and sampling of Tullamore’s famous whiskey: Tullamore Dew. Only 15 kilometres away from Tullamore is also Killybegan Distillery for further whiskey samplings. Then, further along the canal, is Round House at Boland’s Lock, an impressive Loch Keeper’s home, built in 1899 by architect Michael Hayes.
Along the canal there are also opportunities for budding anglers to do a few hours of fishing. Then, for keen golfers, Tullamore Golf Club, which sits just outside of the town, is waiting to be enjoyed.
Further historical highlights that are worth visiting in Tullamore are St Catherine’s, a Gothic Revival church built in 1818, Charleville Castle, a short distance outside of the town, and Birr Castle and Gardens, home to the Great Telescope - a must-see for astrologers.
Tullamore is also very well placed for visits to nearby monastic sites, including Rahhan and Clonmanoise, among many others. The area holds the largest number of monastic sites in Ireland, so there are plenty to visit and explore at your own pace.
For those looking for even more adventure, nearby Slieve Bloom Mountains is perfect for a day’s hike, its highest peak reaching 527m. The mountains can be explored with or without a guide and offer incredible views over the counties of Laois and Offaly.
