History, Tradition and Nature in North Portugal
This excursion combines two of the great treasures of North Portugal: the historical and religious richness of Braga and the unique natural landscapes of Peneda-Gerês National Park, the country's only national park. It is an experience designed for those seeking culture, spirituality, authenticity and direct contact with nature.
Day 1 – Braga, City of Archbishops
Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and one of its most important religious and cultural centers. The tour begins in its historic centre, where the Cathedral of Braga stands out—the oldest cathedral in the country, with its cloisters, chapels and treasury museum.
This is followed by a stroll through the traditional streets, passing by places such as the Arco da Porta Nova, gardens and historic squares, where you can soak up the city's vibrant atmosphere.
The highlight of the visit is the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, famous for its monumental Baroque staircase, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the top, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Braga and the surrounding valleys. There is free time for photos, a visit to the sanctuary, coffee or breakfast/lunch, depending on the programme.
Day 2 - Gerês – Peneda-Gerês National Park, a region of extraordinary natural beauty, characterised by deep valleys, crystal-clear rivers, waterfalls, forests and community villages.
The route follows scenic roads, with stops at natural observation decks, lagoons and waterfalls – perfect for taking photos and enjoying moments of relaxation. Depending on the pace of the group, short, easy hikes, visits to typical villages, old bridges or dams may be included.
In Gerês, you are fully immersed in nature: fresh air, silence, untouched landscapes and the chance to observe the fauna and flora typical of northern Portugal. On hot days, free time can be allowed for swimming in natural lagoons or for a lunch break at a regional restaurant.
This itinerary has been designed to provide a complete, well-balanced and memorable experience, bringing together some of the country's most iconic destinations, landscapes and cultural expressions. Each route, visit and activity has been carefully selected to ensure comfort, a variety of experiences and authentic engagement with the local identity.
However, the itineraries, routes and paths presented are completely flexible and can be adjusted or redefined according to each client's interests, needs and pace. The stages of the programme, the order of the visits and the distances travelled can be adapted, allowing for the creation of a personalised, tailor-made itinerary without compromising the quality or essence of the experience.
