Activity itinerary

Day 1: Day One - Saturday: Marathon & Thermopylae

  • 3 stops
  • Meals: Not included
  • Accommodation: Not included

Archaeological Museum of Marathon

  • 2h
  • Admission ticket included
The weekend begins east of Athens on the wide coastal plain of Marathon, where in 490 BC Athenian hoplites defeated a vastly superior Persian force. Walking across the battlefield itself, the storey of the battle unfolds hour by hour: terrain, deployments, formations, command decisions and the decisive moments that shattered the Persian army. Standing on the ground where it happened, the scale and audacity of the victory become immediately clear in a way no book or documentary can convey. During our battlefield review we will cover the Persian and Athenian camps, the Trophy site, the burial mound of the fallen Athenians and the archaeological museum.

Kamena Vourla

  • 1h
Lunch break. From Marathon, the journey continues north through increasingly dramatic scenery as open plains give way to mountain corridors and narrow passes. We make a relaxed stop at the seaside town of Kamena Vourla where guests can enjoy a break amid striking coastal scenery - an ideal setting to reflect, discuss and absorb the experience before making our way to Thermopylae.

Thermopylae

  • 1h 20m
Arrival at Thermopylae at about 3pm marks a powerful shift in tone - from victory to ultimate sacrifice. Here, on the world’s most famous battlefield, guests walk the same ground where Leonidas and his 300 Spartans fought a desperate three-day battle in August 480 BC against overwhelming odds. The battle is reconstructed in vivid detail, bringing to life the tactics, terrain and human drama of history’s most legendary last stand before returning to Athens in late afternoon.

Day 2: Day Two - Sunday: Salamis & Plataea

  • 4 stops
  • Meals: Not included
  • Accommodation: Not included

Battle of Plataea Battlefield

  • 2h
Leaving Athens, the tour heads towards the plains of Plataea, site of the final and decisive land battle of the Persian Wars in 479 BC. Amid peaceful rural scenery, standing right on the ground where the action unfolded, our expert military advisors reconstruct the battle in full detail: the dispositions of Persian, Spartan, Athenian and allied Greek forces, the key phases of the fighting and the decisive role of discipline, leadership and terrain. Standing on the open battlefield, the scale and finality of the Greek victory is unmistakable. The moment when an empire was stopped and the future of Greece and Europe secured.

Egaleo

  • 40m
After a relaxed stop for lunch at Dervenia, the route takes us south towards the Saronic Gulf, with sweeping views across the rugged shoreline and beautiful scenery. From Mount Aegaleo, overlooking the entire bay of Salamis, the naval battle of 480 BC is explained in clear operational terms. Fleet compositions, ship manoeuvring, currents, wind patterns and command decisions reveal how the Greeks deliberately trapped the numerically superior Persian fleet in confined waters.

Monument for the Battle of Salamis

  • 15m
A ferry crossing to Salamis Island places guests directly above the heart of the fighting, where it is easy to visualise the chaos of ramming ships and echoing war cries. On the island of Salamis we visit the monument for the Fighters of Salamis.

Hellenic Maritime Heritage Park

  • 45m
  • Admission ticket included
Before returning to Athens, we visit the trireme Olympias, a faithful reconstruction of the classical Greek warship that triumphed in the straits of Salamis, kept at the Hellenic Maritime Heritage Park near Piraeus. Guests obtain a first hand view of the battle ship of ancient times.
