Immerse yourself in the heart of Mongolian culture with a 4-day stay with a nomadic family. Experience the essence of Mongolia by living with a genuine herder family, consisting of an elderly couple, their English-speaking daughter / not avialable after 1 of Sep / , and her four children.
Live a peaceful life surrounded by beautiful nature, caring for horses and cows. Nestled among four hectares of sea buckthorn orchards, the family’s home offers a quiet escape from the city. This is the perfect place to experience authentic Mongolian nomadic culture, warm hospitality, and the beauty of the countryside.
Contribute to the family's daily chores, sleep in a ger, and share all meals with the family.
Full itinerary:
Day 1: Travel from Ulaanbaatar to a Nomadic family
In the morning, we will be pick you up from your accomodation in Ulaanbaatar and drive you to the bus terminal station. We will give you your bus ticket you will travel for 5 hours across the steppes. Your nomadic family will come pick you up from the bus station and drive you back to their camp.
Once at the camp, you will be welcomed with the traditional Mongolian milk tea before settling you in your very own ger.
Day 2: Live like a Nomad
The family wakes up early to take care of the daily activities. After breakfast, you are welcome to participate in the family's daily activities (optional):
- Milking cows or mares (seasonal)
- Feeding livestock
- Collecting dried dung for fuel
- Preparing dairy products
- Baking traditional bread
- Making Mongolian milk tea
- Learning how a ger is organised
- Herding cows with the family
Guests can participate as much or as little as they wish. You will share all meals with the family in their ger.
In the afternoon, you can decide to ride a horse across the vast steppes towards Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes.
Here are some possible activities at the sand dunes:
- Sand sledging
- Watching the sunset over the desert
- Camel ride (extra fee)
Day 3: Relax & learn about the nomadic culture
You are free to continue contributing to the family's daily activities or to shape your day as you prefer.
Optional activities:
- Learn traditional Mongolian games
- Archery (if available)
- Horse riding
- Photography
- Hiking across the steppe
- Reading while surrounded by nature
- Enjoy landscapes and wildlife.
Spend your final evening around a campfire, listening to stories about nomadic life and Mongolian traditions. At night, you can appreciate one of the darkest skies you'll ever find and observe the milky way.
Day 4: Return to Ulaanbaatar
You will share one last breakfast and your family will drive you back to the bus station in Rashaant. They will see you safely in your bus and you will enjoy another 5 hours ride across the Mongolian steppes, with your head full of memories. Your host family will give you a lunch box for your ride.
You'll arrive in Ulaanbaatar around 15:00–16:00 pm in Dragon Bus Terminal and end your trip.
