Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is situated on the coast of the north-eastern portion of Busan. This superb attraction offers visitors the rare find of a temple along the shore line; most temples in Korea are located in the mountains. Haedong Yonggungsa Temple was first built in 1376 by the great Buddhist teacher known as Naong during the Goryeo dynasty. Haesu Gwaneum Daebul (Seawater Great Goddess Buddha), Daeungjeon Main Sanctuary, Yongwangdang Shrine, Gulbeop Buddhist Sanctum (enclosed in a cave), and a three-story pagoda with four lions can all be seen looking out over the ocean. Many people often come to this spot on New Year's Day to make a wish for the new year as they watch the sun come up. April is an especially beautiful time of year with cherry blossoms in full bloom. The birth of Buddha is also celebrated in the fourth month of the lunar calendar and offers a spectacular night view as the temple area is aglow with lit lanterns.

Daebyeon Port Entrance

Daebyeon port As one of the 100 beautiful fishing villages selected by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Daebyeon Port is a venue for the anchovy festival. Anchovies are a speciality of Gijang and fish in shoals. In Anchovy Theme Square, the main place for the festival, iconic towers and gorgeous sculptures with a blend of lighting, music, and fountains catch the eyes of people. as well as enjoy abalone porridge with live seafood and dry seafood shopping.

Haeundae Dalmaji-gil Road

Dalmaji road photo zone Called Busan’s Montmartre, Dalmaji-gil Road is famous for its views of the blue ocean, white sandy beach, Camellia forest, and pine tree forest, creating one of Busan’s eight scenic sites. Haeundae Dalmaji Hill and the moon seen from Cheongsapo are added to the eight scenic sites for their beautiful ambiance.

Songjeong Beach

Songjeong Beach stretches for 1.2 kilometres with a width ranging from 30 to 60 metres. The white sandy beach is ideal for families with young children because of its shallow waters. The beach is very popular as a photography venue for pre-wedding photoshoots. The area around the beach offers many hoe (sliced raw fish) restaurants. Jukdo Park is located north of the beach at the entrance to Songjeonghang Port. The white and red lighthouses of the harbour are a popular photo spot, as well as the view of the beach from Songiljeong Pavilion at the peak of Jukdo Park. The path leads through a grove of evergreens. Fishermen often line the breakwaters to the lighthouses.

Haeundae Beach

Haeundae Beach is the most famous beach in Busan. The white sand beach is roughly 1.5 kilometres long, over a 30- to 50-meter wide area, creating a beautiful coastline before a shallow bay, making it perfect for swimming. People flock to Haeundae Beach every summer. All kinds of accommodation from luxury hotels to private guesthouses have developed in the area around the beach, making this the perfect summer holiday spot. Haeundae Beach is also famous for various cultural events and festivals held throughout the year. Other facilities in the area include Dongbaekseom Island, Busan Aquarium, a yachting dock, BEXCO, driving courses, and more.

Dongbaekseom

Located on Dongbaekseom Island, which is noted for its beautiful, natural landscape accented by dense camellia and pine trees, Nurimaru APEC House has been used as a memorial hall and a prestigious international conference hall since the APEC summit meeting. Nurimaru, a 3-story building, is a modernistic expression of “jeongja,” a pavilion in traditional Korean architectural style. Its roof shape symbolises the ridgeline of Dongbaekseom Island. Its interior design is a visual display of Korea’s creative traditional culture. The terrace, which has a Korean wooden floor concept, towers over Oryukdo Island, Gwangan Bridge and Dallmaji Hill. Located near Haeundae Beach, it not only offers a spectacular view of the beach, but also has the appearance of a reputable international conference hall featuring both modern and natural beauty.

Shinsegae Centum City

Shinsegae Centum City Department Store is registered in the Guinness World Records as the largest shopping complex in the world, offering a full range of entertainment options, from an ice rink to a cinema, golf range, and a spa. Shops include 21 designer brands and 622 famous brands. Opened as the first department store in Korea, Shinsegae reflects decades of retail experience in this flagship location. Globally renowned experts such as Italian architect Claudio Silvestrin and American architecture and design firm Callison completed Centum City under the concept of a “golden sea”. The department store has emerged as a defining landmark in Busan.

UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea

The UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea honours UN soldiers from 16 countries and UN aids from five countries that were killed in battle during the Korean War from 1950-1953. It is the only memorial cemetery in the world dedicated to UN soldiers. While the cemetery originally held up to 11,000 graves, most of the fallen soldiers were repatriated at the request of their families, with only 2,300 graves remaining. The serene park spreads across a grassy plain area of 135,000 square metres. Some notable sites and memorials include: Memorial Service Hall, Memorabilia Hall, two Turkish Monuments, Greek Monument, Australian Monument, British Commonwealth Monument and two ponds.

Oryukdo Skywalk

Oryukdo Island is composed of Usakdo Island, Surido Island, Gonggotdo Island, Guldo Island and Deungdaedo (Lighthouse) Island, but because the upper part of Usakdo divides into two segments, the island is sometimes known as Bangpaedo Island and Sol Island as well, depending on the level of the water. Because many ships coming to Busan Port pass by Oryukdo Island, it serves as a symbol of Busan's cultural heritage as well. Oryukdo Skywalk is located at what was called Seungdumal, meaning a saddle, due to the shape of the point. It was also called Jallokgae by residents and female divers in the area.

From Busan to Geoje Island before entering, Gadeok Rest Area is a place where you can enjoy a simple snack and a museum on the undersea tunnel and Geoga Bridge's construction history and the landscape of the surrounding sea.

Geoga Grand Bridge

"Geoga undersea tunnel and bridge" is construction started early in 2004 on an 8.2km motorway between Busan – Korea’s southernmost, second-largest city – and the island of Geoje. Of this 8.2km, four-lane fixed link, there will be 4km of immersed tunnel and two 2km cable-stayed bridges. It is thought that the immersed tunnel will become one of the longest in the world to date, especially in an area where there is so much seismic activity. "Geoga Bridge" is the route that opened on December 13, 2010yr., and shortens the travelling distance between Geoje Island and Busan as the Bridge is Linking Gadeok Island, a part of Busan, and Geoje Island, the nation’s second-largest island following Jeju, the route will shorten the travelling distance between the two destinations to 60 kilometres from the previous 140 kilometres. Drivers will be able to drive between the two in 50 minutes, compared with about 130 minutes in the past.

OEDO Botania

Oedo-Botania is a marine botanical garden located on an island in Hallyeohaesang National Park between Tongyeong and Geojedo Island. What started over 30 years ago as a private garden has expanded to cover the entire island in a plethora of plants in European-style gardens, accented by sculptures and statues. The garden blooms in a riot of flowers in April, and visitors can walk in the cool shade of the forested trails in summer. Recently, dinosaur footprints were found on the island, adding to its value. The island's cafe offers drinks and light snacks, along with a fantastic view of Haegeumgang Island and the surrounding blue sea. Oedo-Botania is only accessible via a ferry tour, and there are no accommodation on the island

Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp

The Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp is located at what was the largest POW camp during the Korean War. The exhibition halls and video rooms allow visitors to experience the life and feelings of POWs. Remains of the war, such as tanks, trucks and other relics are also on exhibit here.

Hakdong Mongdol Beach

Hakdong Mongdol Beach, filled with small black pebbles, spans a distance of 1.2 kilometres and a width of 50 metres, covering a 30,000 ㎡ area. Walking on the pebbles stimulates acupressure points on the soles of feet, providing health benefits for visitors. Unlike other beaches in the southern part of the country, the water of Hakdong Mongdol Beach is deep with rough waves, but various water activities are available. There are accommodation and restaurants nearby and the dock at the beach offers a boat excursion around popular attractions.

Windy Hill

Windy Hill On the way to Haegeumgang Village, one may encounter the fishing village of Dojangpo. On the left side of the village is Dojangpo Wharf, from where one can take a tour ferry to Oedo Island and Haegeumgang River. Looking up from here, one can see a hill covered in grass and overlooking the sea. This is Windy Hill. A growing number visitors come to the place after it was used as a filming site for popular Korean dramas such as "Eve's Garden (2003)" and "Merry-Go-Round (2004)." The name “Windy Hill” was given by those who visited the island and became a fan. Walking towards the hill along the wooden promenade from the wharf, one can see Hakdong Village from a distance.

Sinseondae

Sinseondae Cliff Sinseondae Observatory, located between Dojangpo Maeul and Haegeumgang, offers picturesque views of the fantastically shaped rocks against the deep-blue ocean hues. "Sinseon" in Korean mean supernatural beings; the beauty of this spot is said to attract such beings to come frolic. The blue and yellow colours layered in the rocks tell a unique history of the terrain. A stairway from the road leads directly to the lookout point. Just past a petrol station along the coastal highway, Sinseondae Observatory reveals itself. Walking out onto the rocks of Sinseondae, views of the surrounding islands and incredible landscape open up to viewers. Many commercials and TV shows have been filmed here taking advantage of this amazing setting. April and May are the perfect times to see the bright-yellow canola flowers across the island.

Seokguram Parking Lot

Seokguram is an artificial grotto constructed of granite that comprises an antechamber, a corridor and a main rotunda. It enshrines a monumental statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha looking out to sea with his left hand in dhyana mudra, the mudra of concentration, and his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra, the earth-touching mudra position. Together with the portrayals of devas, bodhisattvas and disciples, sculpted in high and low relief on the surrounding walls, the statues are considered to be a masterpiece of East Asian Buddhist art. The domed ceiling of the rotunda and the entrance corridor employed an innovative construction technique that involved the use of more than 360 stone slabs.

Bulguksa Temple

Bulguksa is a Buddhist temple complex that comprises a series of wooden buildings on raised stone terraces. The grounds of Bulguksa are divided into three areas – Birojeon (the Vairocana Buddha Hall), Daeungjeon (the Hall of Great Enlightenment) and Geungnakjeon (the Hall of Supreme Bliss). These areas and the stone terraces were designed to represent the land of Buddha. The stone terraces, bridges and the two pagodas – Seokgatap (Pagoda of Sakyamuni) and Dabotap (Pagoda of Bountiful Treasures) – facing the Daeungjeon attest to the fine masonry work of the Silla.

Daereungwon Tomb Complex

Large ancient tombs of kings and nobles of the Silla Kingdom can be seen around Gyeongju at the Daereungwon Tomb Complex. There are twenty-three large tombs located here; 13 have been excavated but only 1 (Cheonmachong - tomb of King Michu) is open to the public. The chamber of the tomb contained a lacquered wooden coffin which had burial goods placed around it. A total of 11,500 artefacts were recovered from the tomb, demonstrating the lavish lifestyle of the king. The tomb was excavated in 1973 and is believed to date probably from the fifth century.

Gyeongju Folk Craft Village

Gyeongju Folk Craft Village consists of 40 thatched and tile-roofed houses, lived in by local artisans of traditional arts and crafts skills. Various fields of crafts production including metal, pottery, timber, jewels, hanbok (Korean traditional clothes), and stone-crafts can be found in the village.

Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village

At Gyeongju Gyochon Village, visitors can see the House of the Gyeongju Choi Clan (Important Folklore Material No. 27) and try some Gyeongju Gyodong Beopju Liquor (Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 86-3). The village centers around the Gyeongju Choi Clan, a family known to have maintained their wealth for over 12 generations, producing many important people. Visitors can learn about the lifestyle and spending habits that enabled the family to do this. The village is also home to the site of Yoseokgung, the house of Silla Princess Yoseok. Gyeongju National Museum

Gyeongju National Museum is loved by visitors and residents alike as it houses numerous historical and cultural artefacts of the Silla dynasty (57 BC - AD 935). The museum recently went through renovation, separating into an art gallery, historical artefacts exhibition hall, Wolji Pond exhibition hall, and a planned exhibition space. In addition to improving facilities for visitors' convenience, Gyeongju National Museum is making efforts to contribute to the community and reestablish its identity as a museum by making efforts to provide lifelong learning opportunities and improve management. Cheomseongdae Observatory

Cheomseongdae is the oldest existing astronomical observatory in Asia.Constructed during the reign of Queen Seon-deok (r. 632-647), it was used to observe stars in order to forecast the weather. This stone structure is a beautiful combination of straight lines and curves, and was designated as National Treasure No.31 on December 20th, 1962. It stands 9.17m high and the base stone on each side measures 5.35m.The Vernal Equinox, Autumnal Equinox, Winter Solstice, Summer Solstice and the 24 solar terms (also known as the astronomical solar year) were determined by observating of stars. The pavilion stone is believed to have been used as a standard of deciding directions, north, south, east and west. The 362 stones used to build Cheomseongdae represented the 362 days in a lunar year.

Bomun Lake

Bomun Tourist Complex is the international tourist district of Gyeongju. This tourist district is formed with Bomunho Lake at its centre, located about 10 kilometres east of city centre Gyeongju. The area spans approximately 8,000 km², and contains an international-scale luxurious hotel, family-friendly condos, golf range, and pleasant walking passages that are designed to suit the diverse needs of tourists. The tourist complex attracts crowds of visitors in April, when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The sight of cherry blossoms around Bomunho Lake and Bulguksa Temple are popular even among domestic travellers.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond

Anamji pond Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond was a secondary palace used by the crown prince of the Silla Kingdom. It also served as a banquet site for important national events and important visitors. The pond was created in 674, during the reign of King Munmu. The pond features three small islands, and a landscape of 12 small hills to the northeast. After the fall of Silla, the site was abandoned and forgotten. The pond was referred to as "Anapji" from the Goryeo and Joseon periods and onwards. In the 1980s, a pottery fragment with the letters “Wolji” (a pond that reflects the moon) carved onto it was found, revealing the true name of the pond. Songdo Beach

Jacalchi Fish market This market represents Busan and is famous throughout the country. Visitors can eat fresh raw fish right at the market. Even nowadays visitors can see women selling mackerel, sea squirts (ascidians) and other seafoods on wooden boxes along the road outside of the market and along the shore.

Gwangalli Beach

Gwangalli Beach is 1.4 km long, 25~110 m wide, and is famous for its fine sand. The area has undergone a water cleaning programme, and as a result, the water of the beach is pristine, drawing many young tourists. In addition to the beachfront, the Gwangalli area is filled with romantic restaurants and cafes, as well as stores selling famous fashion brands. The area has plenty to offer, but many people come in the evening to take in the bright lights of Gwangandaegyo Bridge, stretching across the horizon.
