The "Umbrellas" is an impressive work of art by the famous sculptor Giorgios Zoggolopoulos and is one of the attractions in Thessaloniki that catches the attention of every visitor. Centrally located along Nea Paralia you’ll be charmed by its commanding presence and large size (the umbrellas are 13 metres tall and give the impression that they reach the sky). For the record, this particular work by Zoggolopoulos was exhibited for the first time at the Venice Biennale in 1993, where it received excellent reviews and in 1997 was displayed outside the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki.

Monument Heptapyrgion, also popularly known by its Ottoman name as Yedi Kule. It is a Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress situated on the acropolis of Thessaloniki in Ano Poli and was probably named after the Yedikule Fortress in Constantinople. It served as the major redoubt of the city’s acropolis, as well as the seat of its garrison commander in Ottoman times, until the late 19th century. It was then converted to a prison, which remained open until 1989. Restoration and archaeological work began in the 1970s and continues to this day. The fortress has towered over the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, for over 1,000 years. It was first constructed during the Byzantine era (330 AD to 1453 AD), although this most recent version was rebuilt by the Ottomans after they conquered the city in the 1400s. It goes by a few names: Heptapyrgion, Eptapyrgio, and Yedi Kule, all of which mean “Fortress of Seven Towers.” It’s a bit of a misnomer, though, as the fortress actually has 10 towers.

Vlatadon Monastery was a stauropegion, that is a monastery attached directly to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople. It is now the only Byzantine monastery in Thessaloniki still functioning. It is one of the 15 Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki that were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. This was founded around 1350 A.D. by the brothers Dorotheos and Mark Vlat(t)eon or Vlatades, disciples and friends of St Gregory Palamas. As founder of the Monastery, we also have the empress Anna Palæologina, who was installed in Thessalonica in 1351 and stayed in it as directress until her death. The royal golden-stamped letter must have been written in 1354 in the name of the emperor John Kantakouzenos and the empress Anna Paleologina.

This is the city's largest church (UNESCO World Heritage) and the main sanctuary dedicated to its patron saint, Agios Dimitrios; it stands on the presumed site of his martyrdom c 306. Restored after the fire in 1917, in line with the original architectural plans, the church has retained some features that are of incomparable historical and artistic interest: the 7C Byzantine mosaics decorating the pillars on either side of the entrance to the apse are remarkably delicate and refined.

The Arch of Galerius (known today as “Kamara”), is perhaps the most distinctive and interesting roman structure of Thessaloniki. It is also one of the most popular destinations of the city along with the White Tower for both locals and tourists. It was built to honour the Roman Emperor Galerius who returned victorious to Thessaloniki (about 306 AD) after the wars against the Persians. The triumphal arch was placed vertically on ancient Roman Egnatia Road, passed through the city and was part of the Roman palace which stretched further southwest, and where Navarinou and Ippodromiou squares stand today.

The Rotunda of St. George is located just north of the junction of the two main axes of the city where the Arch of Galerius can be found. It is now one of the 15 Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki that were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. The name Rotunda came from its round shape. It is one of the oldest and more impressive monuments in Thessaloniki. It was built in the first years of Roman tetrarchy, when Caesar Galerius (250-311 AD) was based in Thessaloniki. It was part of the imperial complex, probably in one theory built as Galerius’ mausoleum, but was never used since his mausoleum was found in Romuliana, in Serbia.

Church of the Wisdom of God (Church of Agia Sophia) The cathedral and pilgrimage church of Agia Sophia (The Wisdom of God) is at the historical centre of Thessaloniki, at the square with the same name, at the crossroads of Agia Sophia and Ermou streets. Dedicated to Wisdom and the Word of God is, together with the churches of Agios Dimitrios and Acheiropoietos, among the most important Early Christian monuments of Greece and of the Orthodox world in general. Architecturally, the church belongs to the type of transitional cross-in-square church and is a development of a basilica with a dome.

The complex was arranged around a rectangular paved square. There were stoas on three sides, each of which consisted of a double row of columns and provided direct access to a surrounding zone of public buildings. The southern stoa stood on a vaulted substructure (cryptoporticus) - a double arcade which lay partly underground, making use of the natural slope of the land. To the south, along the whole of the cryptoporticus, lay a row of shops fronting the ancient shopping street which ran along the north side of present-day Philippou St. Off this street lay minor entrances to the square, while the latter opened north, to the present-day Olympou St. In the middle of the east wing, on the site of an earlier council - chamber, a building for public performances was erected, which, on the basis of the inscription and the statues of Muses found there, must have functioned as an odeon.

Modiano is the city's largest indoor market. The architect Eli Modiano designed the market, which opened in 1930 and has carried his name ever since. The building resembles some Parisian markets.

he open air Kapani Market is the oldest market place in Thessaloniki. The market place became a site of martyrdom in 1821 when Turks hung five Elders (leaders of the Christian Community) from Thessaloniki on a plane tree in retaliation for the citizens uprising. Located at the heart of the city centre, the market hosts a whole array of shops, from fish and meat to vegetables, fruits, drinks, olives, sweets, nuts, spices, outdoor shops selling lingerie, flowers, clothes and shoes; and restaurants. Throughout the 20th century Kapani was the central and most crowded marketplace in Thessaloniki. The lively Kapani Market is traditional and therefore offers visitors an incredibly unique experience.

The central square of Thessaloniki is named in honour of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. The statue of the Greek philosopher appears to be holding a pergamine paper in his left hand, while his right one rests with serenity on a higher marble base.
