⑴ Location 1: Kumamoto Castle Walking Tour
Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's top three castles, is a magnificent embodiment of samurai philosophy and strategy from 400 years ago. It is a symbol of pride for the people of Kumamoto. Visitors can explore the castle’s history and architecture, including a 14-story high observation deck. Highlights include:The outer structures (stone walls, Kato Kiyomasa statue)/A special walkway 6 metres above the ground made of locally sourced cypress wood/Stone walls and remnants of the main palace built by the master builder, Kato Kiyomasa/A visit to the castle tower, from the basement to the 4th floor (museum), and the 6th floor observation deck/The Josaien complex, with souvenir shops, restaurants, and the Kumamoto Castle Museum “Excitement Zone”
⑵ Location 2: Kumamoto Castle Town Walking Tour
The castle town surrounding Kumamoto Castle still retains historic buildings and streets, offering a glimpse into the past. Visitors can explore shops and cafes that reflect the culture of Kumamoto. Highlights include:Organic food stores, traditional Japanese confectionery shops, and the oldest bakery in Kumamoto/A walk along the historical Satsuma Kaido road/Nagasaki Jiro Bookshop and other historical buildings/A traditional Japanese toy wholesale store/Kakuchi experience at a traditional off-licence (where you can enjoy drinks on-site)
⑶ Location 3: Suizenji Jojuen Walking Tour
Suizenji Jojuen is a beloved park in Kumamoto, featuring a circuit-style garden with a large pond fed by natural spring water. It showcases the beauty of all four seasons. Visitors can also visit Izumi Shrine and the “Kokin Denju-no-Ma” (a thatched-roof room relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, with optional admission including traditional sweets and matcha). Highlights include:A traditional circuit-style garden with a large pond/Izumi Shrine inside the park
