What makes this tour different
Most visitors to Fes wander the Medina lost, or follow guides who rush them through the same five spots. This tour is led by a licensed local guide born and raised in Fes — someone who can explain not just what you're looking at, but why it matters and what daily life here actually looks like.
What you'll see in 3 hours
Your guide meets you at your riad or a central meeting point and leads you through Fes el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed medieval heart of the city. Along the way you'll pass through the famous tanneries quarter, where leather has been dyed using the same methods for 900 years. You'll stop at Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the finest examples of Moroccan Islamic architecture, and at the Nejjarine Fountain and its surrounding woodworkers' square. You'll also walk past Al-Qarawiyyin, the world's oldest continuously operating university.
The route winds through the spice souks, the metalworkers' alley, and quieter residential streets that most visitors never find.
About the artisan shops
As part of the cultural experience, the tour includes brief visits to local artisan workshops — places where you can watch craftsmen weave carpets, shape pottery, or work with leather. These visits are included to show you how things are made, not to pressure you into buying. There is absolutely no obligation to purchase anything.
Entry fees — important to know before you book
This tour includes your guide for the full 3 hours. Entry fees to individual sites are not included and are paid directly at the door if you choose to enter. Typical fees: Bou Inania Madrasa 70 MAD, Nejjarine Museum 20 MAD, Al-Qarawiyyin Library 70 MAD. Your guide will always tell you the fee before entering and you are free to stay outside and hear the explanation instead.
How the tour ends
At the end of the 3 hours, your guide can walk you back to your starting point or leave you in the Medina to continue exploring on your own — whichever you prefer.
