    4: Merkato (Local Life Experience)
One of Africa’s largest open-air market
Mercato was created during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia between 1936 and 1941. The Italians moved local Ethiopian traders from the old city centre to a new area west of Addis Ababa.
The name “Mercato” comes from the Italian word for “market.”
At first, it was a place mainly for Ethiopian and Arab merchants, while Europeans used the nearby Piazza area for shopping.
After Ethiopia regained independence in 1941, Mercato grew quickly and became the heart of trade in Addis Ababa.
Over time, thousands of small shops, street sellers, and warehouses developed there.
    Why Mercato Is Important
    Mercato is famous for:
    Coffee and spice trading
    Traditional Ethiopian clothes
    Gold, metal, and recycling businesses
    Electronics and household goods
Wholesale markets supplying products across Ethiopia
