Alaskan halibut fishing means dropping to depths of 200-400’ or more with large hooks, heavy leads, and juicy bait. The instant your rig hits the water, the scent of that bait begins to spread out from your position, carried by the tide. Down there in the twilight of the deep, rockfish, cod, flounder, sharks, skates, and the mighty halibut may encounter that scent, and start swimming your way. Your guide will put you in the best position possible to entice these fishes and instruct you on how to hook them, but ultimately it will be your hands on the rod if a hit comes. If that rod bends over, you will feel the power of a pristine ecosystem pulling back against you, striving to survive, and it will be up to you to bring that fish in. Your guide will encourage, advise, and do their best to land the fish, but the fight is all yours. If you are lucky enough to see one of these magnificent animals come to the surface, it’s a highlight of any Alaskan adventure.
