What you can expect

  • Meet your guide at Café Lopes and head to the starting point of the hike in Assureira, Mondim de Basto. Begin your hike along the Olo River, a mountain river that stretches for 36 km, rising in the Alvão Mountain Range and carving its way through the Alvão Natural Park before flowing into the Tâmega River.

Admire the famous waterfall known as the Fisgas de Ermelo, considered the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, formed along its course between the villages of Varzigueto and Ermelo. Along the river, see several traditional watermills powered by water diverted through transverse weirs.

Discover an exceptionally rich river in terms of flora, with native riparian tree species such as ash, alder, willow, and birch. Its fauna is notably populated by brown trout (Salmo trutta), which swim upstream, overcoming waterfalls and resting in the cool, crystal-clear pools.

Throughout this route, admire one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the Basto region, with waterfalls and clear, refreshing pools that invite a swim during warm weather.
