What you can expect

The Palace of Boniface VIII is an ancient medieval structure later enlarged with large frescoed rooms, paintings, works of art and valuable furniture. It is located in the city centre and its construction began around the 13th century. It was part of a complex of buildings belonging to the Caetani family. A prominent member of this family was Pope Boniface VIII. In this palace is the famous Sala dello Schiaffo (or Hall of the Slap), where the outrage of Giacomo Sciarra Colonna, leader of the French soldiers commanded by Nogaret, who struck the Pontiff, took place. the episode marked an important watershed in medieval European history and was the necessary premise for the Avignonese period.
