You’ll embark on a dolphin and cetacean watching tour off the coast of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Meeting time is at 8:00 AM at the pontoon. After a short briefing, we’ll head out to sea.
For this trip, we’ll navigate offshore towards the Gouf de Capbreton — an impressive underwater canyon. Just a few dozen metres deep near Capbreton, it plunges down to over 4,000 metres. This oceanic trench is a hotspot of marine biodiversity, home to the entire food chain — from plankton to fish to marine mammals. Over fifteen species of cetaceans have been recorded in the area.
It takes about 45 minutes of navigation to reach the observation zone.
There, we often encounter small groups to large pods of dolphins — sometimes numbering in the hundreds.
The most commonly sighted species are striped dolphins, common dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins.
In spring, we also frequently see pilot whales.
More rarely, we may be lucky enough to spot Risso’s dolphins, harbour porpoises, fin whales, sperm whales, or even beaked whales.
In all cases, we approach animals with the utmost respect for their peace and natural behaviour.
Return to the harbour is scheduled for around 12:30 PM.
