This area developed during the Edo period as a commercial district connected to the Takase River, which was used to transport goods such as timber. In the late Edo period, it also became a gathering place for political activists and samurai. Your guide will explain the historical role of the Takase River and how the townscape evolved from the Edo period into modern Kyoto.

Sanjo Bridge (Pass by)

Sanjo Bridge is a historic bridge that served as one of the main gateways to Kyoto. During the Edo period, it marked the starting point of several major highways and was used by feudal lords travelling to and from Edo as part of the sankin-kōtai system. The bridge has long been considered the “face of Kyoto,” and this is where you will meet your local guide. We are happy to help taking nice photos as well!

Site of Ikedaya

This is the site of the famous Ikedaya Incident, a key event during the final years of the Edo period. It is closely associated with the Shinsengumi, a special police force that operated in Kyoto.
