What you can expect

Your journey begins at the south gate of Jingshan Park, a meticulously landscaped hill park created during the Ming Dynasty using earth excavated from the moats of the neighbouring Forbidden City and its imperial canals. This artificial hill, known as “Longevity Hill” or “Prospect Hill,” was designed according to Feng Shui principles to protect the imperial palace from northern winds and evil spirits, serving as a private retreat for emperors and their families for centuries. As you enter, you'll stroll through serene gardens, past ancient scholar trees and vibrant peony beds (seasonal), following a clear path that guides you upward. The climb is gentle and consists of paved steps, making it accessible for most visitors. Upon reaching the summit—specifically the Pavilion of Everlasting Spring (Wanchun Ting)—you will be rewarded with what is universally acclaimed as the most magnificent view over the Forbidden City. From this privileged vantage point, the entire 720,000-square-meter palace complex unfolds symmetrically below you. Your guide (or detailed audio guide/app) will help you identify key landmarks: the Meridian Gate, the series of grand halls on the central axis, and the distant Bell and Drum Towers. You'll grasp the profound cosmological and architectural planning of ancient Beijing, laid out as a celestial mirror on earth. Beyond the southern view, you can also gaze upon Beihai Park's white pagoda to the west and the modern skyline to the north. The experience includes ample time for photography and contemplation. The descent allows for exploration of other historical sites within the park, such as the site where the last Ming emperor ended his life. The park is open daily from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM (with seasonal variations for sunset viewing; please check official times), and this tour is timed to avoid crowds, offering a more tranquil and reflective encounter with history.
