Come for the wine or come for the stories. No judgement either way.

Three Portuguese wines, poured one at a time as we go: a Vinho Verde from the north, a white from the Douro valley, and a tawny port from the Gaia lodges we pass on the way. Each one arrives with a few words on where it comes from and why it tastes the way it does. Not a script, just the answer to whatever you ask next.

An authentic experience: the river, a captain at the helm and a glass in your hand.

Two of us aboard on every departure, captain and crew, for a maximum of twelve guests. One steers, the other looks after you. Nobody pours their own wine and nobody waits.

The river does the rest. Under the Arrábida arch, then the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia with the old rabelo boats moored below the rooftops, the same route the wine took down from the valley for two hundred years. Porto's UNESCO old town falls down the hillside to the water. Then the Luís I bridge overhead, the double-deck iron arch everyone came for, and on to the Maria Pia upriver, the oldest of them all.

We turn there and drift back to the river mouth, where the Douro meets the Atlantic.
