About us: Royal Toone Theatre, is a puppet theatre for adults - the last living example of a unique cultural tradition that dates from the 16th century when Philip II of Spain, afraid of political unrest, closed all the theatres.
The puppet shows were a way around the ban. Toone, dating from approximately 1830, is named after the founding puppeteer Antoine Gentil. Each succeeding puppet master is named Toone, and twice the succession has passed from father to son.
