Cambridge beyond its colleges: history, secrets, and fun facts
Hi! I'm Spanish, from Santander, and I'm passionate about the history, architecture, and human stories that lie hidden in Cambridge. I love uncovering the little details that often go unnoticed and sharing the anecdotes that bring its streets, buildings, and historic spots to life.
On this 2-hour, 2.5-km walk, we'll visit the city's most iconic sites, but also those lesser-known spots that hold surprising stories. It will be an intimate and laid-back experience, where you can ask questions, explore, and enjoy Cambridge at your own pace and with your loved ones in a private setting.
We'll travel from the city's medieval origins to its current status as one of Europe's great centers of knowledge and innovation. We'll talk about scientists who changed the way we understand the world, rebellious students, university traditions, historic pubs, and figures whose lives left their mark. Because Cambridge is much more than a university: it's a city full of secrets, rivalries, discoveries, and fascinating stories.
What will we discover during the tour?
Over the course of 13 stops, we'll explore some of the places that make Cambridge unique:
The historic colleges: we'll discover the beauty and stories of St John's, Trinity, Gonville and Caius, and King's College, while learning how university life began and evolved.
The heart of the city: We'll stroll through Market Square and visit Great St Mary's Church, the Senate House, and the evocative St Edward's Passage, linked to the events of the Reformation.
Stories that left their mark: We'll stop at The Eagle, the historic pub associated with Cambridge scientists, and at St Benet's, considered the oldest church in the city.
Ingenuity and fun facts: We'll discover the famous Corpus Christi Clock and the astonishing Mathematical Bridge, two places that conceal details worth knowing about.
Cambridge by the River: We'll cross the River Cam and stroll through the beautiful area of The Backs, taking in some of the most iconic views of the colleges, until we reach our end location: the Wren Library at Trinity College.
During the tour, I'll share stories, interesting facts, and details with you that will help you see Cambridge in a different light. It's not just about admiring beautiful buildings, but also about understanding the people, ideas, and events that make them special places.
