Chichén Itzá is one of the most iconic and well-preserved archaeological sites of the ancient Mayan civilisation, located in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it is a place rich in history, architecture, and astronomical knowledge. At the heart of the site stands the impressive Temple of Kukulcán (also known as El Castillo), a step-pyramid designed with extraordinary precision. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun creates an illusion of a serpent descending the pyramid’s staircase—an event that reflects the Maya’s advanced understanding of astronomy. Chichén Itzá also features remarkable structures such as the Great Ball Court, the largest of its kind in Mesoamerica, where ancient ceremonial ball games were held; the Temple of the Warriors with its iconic rows of columns; and the sacred Cenote Sagrado, used for rituals and offerings.
