What you can expect

Full Day Godley Head & Coastal Port Hills Tour:

The day begins from Christchurch, travelling through New Zealand’s second-longest road tunnel to reach the historic port town of Lyttelton. Here you’ll have some free time to explore this fascinating harbour settlement, known for its strong links to Antarctic exploration.

Leaving Lyttelton via its steep and narrow hillside streets, you make a short stop at the historic Timeball Station and enjoy panoramic views from the Evans Pass lookout. You then continue over the Port Hills via Evans Pass and descend towards Sumner Beach, where your guide sets up a relaxed morning tea stop.

From Sumner Beach, a short drive brings you to Taylors Mistake Beach. From here, you begin the guided walk of Godley Head, following a well-formed loop track of approximately 8 km (around 3 hours). The coastal trail climbs gently above dramatic cliffs before descending to rocky shoreline areas where, if conditions allow, you may spot the rare White-flippered penguin (optional viewing).

Lunch is provided at Boulder Bay or atop Godley Head, followed by time to explore the extensive World War II coastal defence remnants. This historic site offers sweeping views across Lyttelton Harbour, Banks Peninsula, and Christchurch city.

On the return walk, your guide shares stories about the military history of the site and its role in New Zealand’s WWII coastal defence network. The return drive takes you back through Sumner Village and along the estuary before arriving back in Christchurch for hotel or city centre drop-off.

  • Track grade: Easy – Moderate fitness required, 3-4 hrs of walking time.
  • Walking distance: 6-9 km (flexible depending on group ability)
  • Total elevation gain: 380-440 m
  • Lunch included

Half-Day Godley Head Walk (Lyttelton Route via Evans Pass):

This half-day option begins in Christchurch and travels directly to Lyttelton. From there, you ascend via the steep and scenic hillside road over Evans Pass and continue along Summit Road, enjoying expansive views over the Port Hills and coastline.

You arrive at the Godley Head Car Park, where your guided walk begins. At the picnic tables near the car park, there is time to enjoy morning or afternoon tea before setting off.

From here, you follow a loop track, exploring the coastal headland and passing significant WWII defence remnants along the way, including historic gun emplacements and structures, as well as the restored Scott’s Hut site.

The walk offers uninterrupted views across Lyttelton Harbour and the surrounding coastline, before returning to the car park. The tour concludes with the return drive back to Christchurch or Lyttelton.

  • Track grade: Very easy, 2.5 hrs of walking time
  • Walking distance: 3-5 km (flexible depending on group ability)
  • Total elevation gain: ~180 m
  • Lunch not included
