Monterosso al Mare

The largest and most resort-like of the five villages spreads across two bays—the medieval old town huddled beneath its defensive tower and the newer Fegina beach district stretching along the only real sand beach in the Cinque Terre. The old town's baroque churches, pedestrian lanes, and excellent restaurants maintain traditional character while the beach offers sunbeds, swimming, and the seaside relaxation the other villages cannot provide. Via dell'Amore (Pass by)

The famous 'Lovers' Path' connecting Riomaggiore to Manarola has been closed for repairs since a 2012 landslide, though sections have gradually reopened and full restoration is promised. When accessible, this paved walkway offers the easiest and most romantic of Cinque Terre walks, its dramatic sea views and tunnel of love locks making it the trail everyone hopes to walk. Corniglia

The only village without direct sea access sits 100 metres above the water on a promontory surrounded by vineyards, its 382 brick steps (or long stairway bus) discouraging casual visitors and preserving a quieter atmosphere than its neighbors. Corniglia's relative tranquility and authentic local character reward those willing to make the climb, with excellent restaurants and bars serving fewer tourists than the more accessible villages.

Vernazza

Many consider Vernazza the most beautiful of the five villages, its natural harbour protected by a dramatic promontory crowned with a medieval watchtower and the striped Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia. The village suffered devastating flooding in 2011 but has been lovingly restored, its small piazza, excellent restaurants, and swimming from the harbour rocks returning to pre-disaster glory. The climb to the Doria Castle ruins rewards effort with 360-degree views that encompass all five villages on clear days, while the harbor's tiny beach provides the only sand between Riomaggiore and Monterosso.

Riomaggiore

The southernmost and most accessible of the five villages cascades down a steep ravine in a riot of pastel-painted houses that seem to defy gravity as they cling to the rocky slopes above a tiny harbour. The village's single high street, Via Colombo, tunnels through the buildings from the train station to the waterfront, lined with restaurants, wine bars, and shops selling the limoncello and pesto that define local cuisine. The harbor's concrete swimming area and the dramatic stairs climbing to the castle provide the best views of Riomaggiore's improbable architecture, while sunset transforms the scene into the iconic image that draws millions to this coast.

Sentiero Azzurro

The famous coastal path connecting all five villages offers the quintessential Cinque Terre experience, its 12 kilometres of trails winding through vineyards, along cliff edges, and past viewpoints that have inspired travellers since the Romantics discovered this coast. The full trail requires a Cinque Terre Card and varies in difficulty—Via dell'Amore (when open) is flat and paved while the section between Corniglia and Vernazza includes challenging switchbacks. Trail sections may close for maintenance or weather; check conditions daily and carry water, as the Mediterranean sun and steep climbs challenge even fit hikers.
