What you can expect

It is located in the west of the island of La Palma, in the Aridane valley, on the leeward and sunny side of the island, which constitutes a very favourable location, in addition to the fact that the western part of the island is quite irrigated. and it has lower slopes than in the remaining areas, and hence the name of the city.

It is the city with the most population on the Island, surpassing the capital (Santa Cruz de La Palma).

It is the economic capital of La Palma due to its prominence in areas such as agriculture and tourism. The city extends from the Plaza de España, where there are some Indian laurels that are considered the oldest in the Canary Islands and the church of Los Remedios. Behind it is the so-called Plaza Chica, with a carved stone fountain. At the top of the town are Fernández Taño and Calvo Sotelo streets, with picturesque low Canarian-style houses.

With more than 500 years of history, the urban layout of Los Llanos de Aridane was consciously applied around 1521 in the manner of the colonial foundations of the New World. This population centre began to form around the local parish, the Church of Los Remedios, in the middle of the flattest and most fertile lands for growing cereals. The traditional architecture of Los Llanos, both civil and religious, has great heritage interest with countless properties worth preserving and protecting.

Our Tour covers the Plaza de España, the heart of the city and the lungs of the daily life of the inhabitants. This is surrounded by the oldest Indian laurels in the Canary Islands and the royal palm trees brought from Cuba by “the Indianos.”

Next we will visit the Church of Los Remedios, built by the first Castilian conquerors in the 16th century. Its interior houses the flamenco panel of the Patroness of the municipality, the Virgen de los Remedios. We will continue through Plaza Chica with its beautiful carved stone fountain until we continue to the upper part of the municipality. Throughout the way, you can appreciate the beauty of the small houses with typical Canarian architecture, ground-floor houses, cheerful, colourful and unique in their style.

Not only will we tour the elegant Old Town, we will also visit the extraordinary graffiti by world-known artists that decorate the walls and buildings, both modern and ancient. “Street art” lovers will enjoy and delight in this Mural route that the City Council launched more than 20 years ago. With the intention of achieving an “Open Air Museum”, more than 35 works ranging from local artists such as Carmen Cloguen, to national artists such as Javier Mariscal or international artists such as Boa Vista, the Frenchman Louis Lambert or the prestigious German Albert Oehlen. Graffiti, photographs, murals of astonishing dimensions, even sculptures like that of Fernando Bellver.
