What you can expect
Embark on an unforgettable 8-day adventure on the Lemosho Route, a scenic path that unveils Kilimanjaro's diverse wonders. Your journey begins on the western slopes, where a dense rainforest teeming with exotic birds and colourful butterflies welcomes you. Breathe in the crisp air as you trek beneath towering trees, sunlight dappling the lush foliage.
Day 2 marks a shift in scenery as you ascend towards the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude moorland dotted with volcanic craters and lava towers. Keep your eyes peeled for shy antelope and elusive rock hyraxes that might make an appearance. The panorama here is breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks emerging from a vast canvas of rolling hills.
As you traverse the Shira Plateau on Day 3, you'll encounter a fascinating geological oddity – the Shira Calderea, a collapsed volcanic caldera. Explore the lunar-like landscape and imagine the fiery forces that shaped this dramatic terrain. Days 4 and 5 will see you navigate semi-desert regions, where resilience is key. But the reward is incredible – witness the imposing Barranco Wall, a near-vertical cliff face that adds a touch of drama to the hike.
The climb intensifies as you reach Barranco Camp on Day 6, nestled amidst giant boulders. Here, proper acclimatisation becomes crucial. You might even embark on a short acclimatisation hike, taking in the panoramic views and preparing your body for the summit push.
Day 7 takes you to Karanga Camp, a high-altitude plateau offering stunning vistas of Kibo, the volcanic cone that forms Kilimanjaro's peak. The air thins here, and the feeling of accomplishment will surely grow as you conquer each step.
The summit night is a challenging but rewarding experience on Day 8. You'll depart Barafu Camp in the pre-dawn hours, tackling scree slopes and navigating the unforgiving darkness. But as the first rays of dawn paint the sky, you'll reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The feeling of standing on the “Roof of Africa,” witnessing a sunrise unlike any other, is an unforgettable triumph.
Descending from the summit is equally scenic. You'll trek through Mweka Camp, passing through lower ecological zones and witnessing the diverse vegetation shift once more. As you reach the Mweka Gate on your final day, you'll be greeted with a sense of exhilaration and accomplishment, forever marked by your incredible journey on the Lemosho Route.
