There has been a market on this site since 1788 and its official name is the Princes Street Market. The reclaiming of marshy lands strongly influenced the development of the market. The channels in between were in - filled to form many of today’s st reets such as St Patrick’s, Grand Parade and Princes Street, proving ideal in forming the market.
St Patrick Street

The street once formed a curving part of the River Lee and was initially turned into a canal, alongside which quays and sh ops sprang, until, in 1780, it was completely filled in to form the street it is today.
