Step into a landscape where history, border politics, and everyday life converge on this private full-day tour of Dandong. Your driver-guide choices you up from your Dandong hotel and sets off along the Yalu River, the natural boundary between China and North Korea.
Your first stop is the Yalu River Broken Bridge — a steel railway bridge built in 1909. Bombed during the Korean War, its severed truss still carries the scars of aerial bombardment. Walk its remaining span and look across the river at the newer Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, still in use today.
Next, head to the Korean War Memorial Hall (about 1 hour), where exhibits, photographs, and artefacts trace the course of the conflict and the Chinese volunteers who crossed this very river.
Continue to the Yanwo Railway Bridge Ruins, a wooden trestle bridge built in wartime. Its remaining pilings stand in the river, a quiet testament to the logistical lifeline that once moved troops and supplies under cover of darkness.
Then drive to Hushan Great Wall — the eastern terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. The wall climbs a steep ridge above the Yalu River. From the top, you can see both the wall snaking into the distance and North Korean farmland on the opposite bank. The site includes the wall itself, a small museum, and a shuttle bus that takes you to the summit.
At the China-North Korea 'One Step Cross' border point, the two countries are separated by a waist-high fence. Stand here and watch North Korean villagers working in the fields, soldiers patrolling the riverbank, and the daily rhythm of a country just metres away but a world apart.
Finally, board a Yalu River sightseeing cruise at Hekou Pier. The 40-minute boat ride takes you close to the North Korean shore, where you can see collective farms, village houses, a supply cooperative, military barracks, and watchtowers. Your guide points out landmarks and shares context about the border region.
After the cruise, your driver-guide returns you to your Dandong hotel.
