Free visit to the historic centre of Matera where there are two areas called "Sassi", these are valuable rock complexes, inhabited since the dawn of prehistoric civilisation, houses dug into the limestone rock. The "Sassi" became a World Heritage Site in 1993. An ideal place as a film set, it hosted the filming of the famous film "The Passion of the Christ" starring Mel Gibson, a world-famous actor.
