Discover one of Tajikistan’s most remarkable engineering landmarks on this scenic day trip from Dushanbe to the impressive Nurek Dam, located about 75 km east of the capital.
Your guide will meet you at your hotel at 09:00 for the drive towards the dam along the valley of the Vakhsh River. En route, pass through the small town of Nurek, a settlement originally developed during the Soviet period to support the construction and operation of the hydroelectric power station.
Completed in 1980, Nurek Dam stands 305 metres high and remains one of the tallest dams in the world. The structure plays a vital role in Tajikistan’s energy system, generating a significant portion of the country’s hydroelectric power through its nine turbines.
Upon arrival, visit the dam and, if permitted, drive to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the vast Nurek Reservoir. The reservoir, created by the dam, is the largest artificial lake in Tajikistan, stretching nearly 70 km through the valley and known for its striking turquoise waters.
Continue to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the reservoir to fully appreciate its scale and natural beauty. Along the way, there may be an opportunity to stop at small roadside stalls selling local dried fruits and regional snacks.
After the visit, return to Dushanbe, where the tour concludes.
