Humayun's Tomb was commissioned by Empress Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum), Humayun's first wife, in 1569-70, after his death, with construction starting in 1565 and finishing around 1572, and it was designed by Persian architects Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son Sayyid Muhammad. This first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent fused Persian and Indian styles, serving as a prototype for later Mughal architecture, including the Taj Mahal, and was built by his grieving widow to honour him.
