Overview

  • Discover the stories behind The Hague's grand facades on this private walking tour.

You explore the political and royal heart of the Netherlands with your own guide: the Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace, the Mauritshuis, and elegant streets and squares like Lange Voorhout, the Plein, and De Passage.

Your guide brings the city's history to life with stories of William of Orange, the House of Orange, and Johan de Witt: the statesman who ran the Dutch Republic at its height, and met a violent end right here in The Hague.

Along the way you also see the Mauritshuis, home to Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, and lesser-known gems like the Escher Museum (in a former palace).

This is a private tour, so you set the pace. By the end, you will understand The Hague in a way most visitors never do.

And if you have a special interest in a certain topic, just let us know.

Activity itinerary

Het Plein

  • 10m
The tour starts on the Plein, right in the centre of The Hague. Here you learn about the Father of the Fatherland, William of Orange, and his role in the Eighty Years' War: the Dutch Revolt.

The Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery

  • 10m
You walk to the Mauritshuis museum, and your guide tells you about the building and its history. The museum holds some of Johannes Vermeer's most famous paintings.

Binnenhof & Ridderzaal (Inner Court & Hall of the Knights)

  • 10m
You briefly walk onto the square inside the parliament complex and see the Ridderzaal (Knights' Hall). Your guide tells you about the meaning and history of this place. With some luck, you might see a minister, or even the prime minister, walking by!

Hofvijver

  • 10m
The Hofvijver pond lies in front of the parliament buildings and the prime minister's office (the little tower!). You learn why this place matters and hear some fun stories from its history.

Thorbecke Monument

  • 10m
The statue of Thorbecke next to the Hofvijver is more interesting than it looks: it has to do with the Dutch constitution. Your guide tells you more.

Lange Voorhout

  • 20m
The Lange Voorhout is the Champs-Élysées of The Hague, a very classy street. As you stroll along it, you pass several embassies, an art museum, a famous hotel, the temporary senate building, a gallery of statues of Dutch heads of state and more (royal) buildings.

Noordeinde Palace

  • 10m
You see Noordeinde Palace, the working palace of the Dutch king. The flag tells you whether he is in the country.

Grote Kerk

  • 15m
You see the Grote Kerk ('Great Church') of The Hague. And what is that stork doing on top of it?

Statue of Johan de Witt

  • 15m
Another statue, with a remarkable storey: Johan de Witt was a Dutch head of government who was literally eaten by an angry mob. It sounds strange, but you'll find out what happened.
