On this unique hidden gem of a walking tour, a local guide will take you on a journey through time, you will learn about Tallaght's ancient past (over a thousand years of history) and its development in recent decades into one of Ireland's largest urban centres.
You will be immersed in various rich stories from differing periods of Irish history - from the former Whitehall House - Katharine Tynan's (poet and writer - an early light in the Irish Literary Revival) former residence - a former hotspot for many from W.B. Yeats to George William Russell (AE), examine her relationship with W.B. Yeats, to visiting the former location of the Tallaght Aerodrome (its role in WW1, to the Irish War of Independence to the Irish Civil War), to the history of the former Urneys Chocolate (a brand which evokes much nostalgia in Ireland). As we approach Tallaght Village, you will see beauitful vistas of Dublin Mountains and we will take a look at one of the best-known legends from Irish Mythology of Oisín and Tír na nOg - a real life location in this legend can be found up in Dublin Mountains! We will visit St. Maelruain's Church built on the former 6th century monastery known as one of the 'Two Eyes of Ireland' and the resting place of writer/poet + a founding-member and a vice-president of the Daughter's of Ireland, led by Maud Gonne, Alice Furlong, to name but a few.
Some literature (in Irish and English) will be shared allowing for an immersive unique cultural experience. Our last stop will be in Tallaght Village, some basic Irish, the beauitiful native language of Ireland will be taught and you are very welcome to use some Irish in a special local café after the tour.
