What you can expect

The Irish Potato Famine was the most catastrophic event in Ireland's turbulent history. It is also regarded as being one of the worst Famines in history (deaths as a proportion to population). The use of the word 'Famine' in this context is controversial, for Ireland at the time was part of the richest Empire in the World (the British Empire). There was sufficient food in the country throughout the 'Famine' years, yet over a million people died from starvation and disease, and millions more were forced to flee. So the question is, how could this have happened?.

The exhibition is located on the 2nd floor of the Stephens Green Shopping Centre, and is open every day from 12pm to 6pm. Allow at least one hour for your visit. You will walk around various rooms containing storyboards where the storey of what happened is revealed in an easy to understand, step by step fashion. There is a bench in each room and seating for the 15 minute overview film. Two original Newspaper articles describing the catastrope are displayed. So too are two personal letters, one from a tenant to his landlord, another from a father to his son. An original cast iron soup pot is also on display.

The exhibition is also available to purchase in Book and Usb stick format at the Reception desk. On the Usb stick, the storyboards are broken up and shown in film format set to suitable mood music. The 15 minute overview film is also included.
