The Mid-Atlantic Rift, which separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, stretches along the Reykjanes Peninsula. Despite being sandwiched between two tectonic plates, there haven't been any volcanic eruptions there in at least 800 years. All of that changed, though, in March 2021, when the Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted. A stunning display of red-hot lava fountains during the 6-month-long eruption attracted hundreds of tourists to the area.
