In the evening, enjoy a short city tour before dinner. Stop at Sukhbaatar Square, the central square of Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by important landmarks: the Government House and Parliament to the north, the State Opera and Ballet Theatre to the east, the Stock Exchange and City Hall to the west. In the centre stands the statue of General Sukhbaatar, hero of Mongolia’s independence in 1921.

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar-Khognokhan mountain

Khogo Khan Mountain Camp

Visit Gandan monastery – Ulaanbaatar’s largest and most impressive Buddhist monastery. The complex is comprised of varying temples from different periods and one of the high-light is viewing the 26-metre-high gold-coated indoor Buddha called Megjidjanraiseg. Start a 4-5 hour scenic drive west from Ulaanbaatar to Khogno Khan Mountain - a beautiful and serene mountainous area set in the heart of Mongolia's grassland. Once the site of a fierce battle between Buddhist sects, nowadays Khogno Khan is considered a place of spirituality. We'll explore a solitary Buddhist temple, hidden from the world, but still occupied and very much in use! You'll spend the evening at our ger camp, relaxing under the shelter of the Khogno Khan Mountains.

Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dune

The afternoon is spent exploring the stunning terrain where red granite mountains tower above green meadows and arid desert landscapes. We'll explore a solitary Buddhist temple, hidden from the world, but still occupied and very much in use! Then, stop at Elsen tasarkhai an area of rolling dunes that look out of place surrounded by green steppe, known as the 'mini Gobi' and where you will visit a local herder family with hundreds of horses, sheep, goats and cows. Day 3: Kharkhorin, Erdene-Zuu monastery

Erdene Zuu Monastery

A day trip to Kharkhorin town. 90kms one way. Kharkhorin was the former capital of the Mongolian Empire founded in 1220 by the order of Chingis khan. At its height in the 13th century, it was from here that Chinggis Khan's son, Ogedei Khan, once ruled the largest land empire the world has ever known. During Kharkorum's golden age much of the city was comprised of tents. These days all that remains of this once-great settlement is the impressive Erdene Zuu Monastery, as well as a few scattered archaeological finds. Once we arrive at Kharkhorin, the first stop will be the immense Erdene Zuu Monastery - Mongolia's first Buddhist centre established in the 16th century, surrounded with 108 stupas and now an active monastery as well as a museum. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit Kharkhorin Museum. These days Kharkhorin is an ordinary small town. Drive back to your camp at Khognokhan mountain. 90kms. Arrive at the camp, dinner and rest.

Day 4: Khognokhan mountain-Ulaanbaatar-Terelj National Park

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar. 280kms and 58kms Enroute, lunch at a restaurant in Ulaanbaatar. Then continue on to the impressive Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue Complex, a 40-meter tall monument built in 2006. Take the lift and stairs up to the horse’s head for a panoramic view.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Drive 30kms to Terelj National park, stop at Turtle Rock, a natural rock formation, and take a short hike to enjoy the scenery. Arrive at a tourist camp and check in. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 5: Terelj NP – South Gobi – Yolyn Am Gorge. Local flight

Yolin Am Ice Field

After an early breakfast, transfer to the airport directly from Terelj NP, 60kms for your domestic flight to Dalanzadgad, the capital of South Gobi Province (40–50 minutes). Drive by 3 minivans! 40 km to your ger camp at the eastern edge of the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. South Gobi is a vast land, four times the size of Switzerland, yet with only 0.4 people per square kilometre. Check in at the camp and have lunch. In the afternoon, drive to the legendary Yolyn Am Gorge, part of a protected national park. This area is home to wildlife such as ibex, snow leopard, foxes, and many bird species, including the majestic lammergeier (bearded vulture) with a wingspan of up to 2 metres. Take a some 2 kms hike to see the ice field that remains frozen even during hot summer days. On the way, visit a local camel herder’s family to experience nomadic life, taste camel milk products and traditional handmade dairy food. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Yolyn Am – Khongor Sand Dunes. 200kms.

Khongor Sand Dunes

Today, drive about 200 km west to the famous Khongor Sand Dunes, known as the “singing dunes,” stretching 180 km long and 25 km wide. Along the way, watch for herds of gazelle and wild ass (khulan) roaming the steppe. Arrive at the dunes and check in to your ger camp. Lunch. In the afternoon, explore the towering golden dunes, some rising as high as a 10-story building. Enjoy camel riding along the base of the dunes or climb up for a panoramic view of the endless desert. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 7: Khongor Dunes – Bayanzag flaming clifs– Dalanzadgad. 250kms

Drive back towards Dalanzadgad with a stop at Bayanzag, also known as the Flaming Cliffs, famous for their red sandstone formations and dinosaur discoveries. In 1922, American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews uncovered the world’s first dinosaur eggs and skeletons here, dating back 60–100 million years. Take a walk through the unique saxaul tree forest nearby. Lunch en route. Continue to a ger camp near Dalanzadgad. Dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Dalanzadgad – Ulaanbaatar. Local flight.

Visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum, opened in 2023, showcasing Mongolia’s history, culture, and heritage. On the top floor, see the seated golden statue of Chinggis Khaan, gilded with 107 kg of gold. Lunch at a traditional Mongolian restaurant. Check in at your hotel. Following lunch, we will take you to Zaisan hill historical memorial complex and enjoy panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar city. The next stop is the State Department Store, known in Mongolia as ‘lh Delguur’ or ‘The Big Shop’ – a chance to pick up those last minute souvenirs and learn a little more about the history of Ulaanbaatar. Attend folklore Khoomii singing and dancing performance. After dinner, rest at the hotel.
