What you can expect

Explore the historic town of Lalibela in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, famous for its rock-hewn churches. These churches were carved directly out of solid volcanic rock in the 12th and 13th centuries during the reign of King Lalibela, after whom the town is named. The Lalibela churches are considered one of Ethiopia's holiest sites, and the complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The most famous of the 11 monolithic churches is Bet Giyorgis (Church of St. George), which is shaped like a cross and carved into the ground. The churches are not only architectural marvels but also serve as active places of worship for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.
