What you can expect

Travel to the roots of Korean culture on this immersive 2-day journey through Andong and Gyeongju. More than a sightseeing tour, this experience reveals how Confucianism and Buddhism shaped Korea’s identity, values, education, and way of life. Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient temples, traditional villages, and historic academies while discovering the stories behind Korean civilisation.

Day 1: Andong – The Heart of Confucian Culture

Begin your journey at Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea’s best-preserved traditional villages. Surrounded by the Nakdong River, Hahoe offers a unique glimpse into Joseon-era society and the Confucian traditions that influenced Korean family life, education, and government for centuries.
Explore traditional homes of the Ryu clan and learn about the legacy of renowned scholars and statesmen who helped shape Korean history. Enjoy the famous Hahoe Mask Dance performance (except Mondays), a UNESCO-recognized cultural tradition known for its humour and social satire.

Continue to Byeongsan Seowon, one of Korea’s most beautiful Confucian academies and part of the UNESCO-listed Seowon heritage sites. Here, discover the Neo-Confucian philosophy that became the foundation of Korean society during the Joseon Dynasty.

Visit Bongjeongsa Temple, home to Korea’s oldest surviving wooden building. Nestled in the mountains, this peaceful temple offers insight into Korea’s Buddhist heritage and traditional architecture.

Experience the traditional art of Hanji paper-making and learn techniques passed down through generations. You may also visit the Andong Soju Museum to discover the history and cultural significance of Korea’s most famous traditional distilled liquor.

If staying overnight in Andong, enjoy the beautiful evening scenery of Woryeonggyo Bridge, Korea’s longest wooden pedestrian bridge, illuminated above the Nakdong River.

Day 2: Gyeongju – The Thousand-Year Capital of Silla

Travel to Gyeongju, often called “the museum without walls,” where the legacy of the Silla Kingdom remains visible throughout the city.

Visit Bulguksa Temple, one of Korea’s most celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture. Continue to Seokguram Grotto, where a magnificent stone Buddha overlooks the East Sea from a mountaintop sanctuary.

Explore Hwangnidan-gil, Gyeongju’s vibrant cultural district, where traditional hanok architecture blends with modern cafés, boutiques, and local cuisine.

Conclude your journey at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, one of Korea’s most iconic historic sites. The reflection of ancient palace buildings on the tranquil water creates a memorable finale to your exploration of Korea’s cultural heritage.

This tour offers a unique opportunity to understand the two traditions that shaped Korea: the Buddhist heritage of Gyeongju and the Confucian legacy of Andong. If time is limited, portions of the itinerary may be adjusted.
