Venture south of Hobart into Tasmania's ancient southern forests, a dramatic landscape on the doorstep of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This is a full day of big experiences: treetop walks, thermal springs, and a guided tour through one of Australia's most spectacular dolomite caves.
We allow plenty of time to tick off all the big experiences:
At Tahune Forest Adventures:
• Tahune Airwalk, 619m cantilever walk through the treetops, 50m above the Huon River
• Swinging Bridges Circuit across the Huon River
• Huon Pine Walk along the riverbank
At Hastings Caves Reserve:
• Guided tour of Newdegate Cave, one of Australia's largest dolomite caves
• Swim in the thermal springs pool (28°C year-round)
• Hot Springs Nature Trail
• Platypus Walk
We set off from Hobart, heading south through the Huon Valley, Tassie's apple-growing heartland, and into the tall, green Southern Forests.
Our first stop is Tahune Forest Adventures. We start with a gentle uphill walk through the forest before stepping onto the cantilever, 619 metres through the treetops, 50 metres above the Huon River. The views across the World Heritage wilderness from the end of the cantilever are stunning.
From there, we continue the circuit at ground level. The Swinging Bridges track crosses the Huon River twice, a 100m span followed by a 60m span, both brilliant spots for photos. It's easy to opt out if you'd rather rest up before the afternoon. We finish the Tahune section with the gentle Huon Pine Walk along the riverbank, where some of Tasmania's most ancient trees grow right at the water's edge.
Then we continue south to Hastings Caves State Reserve. Here you can swim in the thermal springs pool, naturally heated to 28°C year-round, or wander the Hot Springs Nature Trail where warm and cool waters meet. Keep an eye on the creek for platypus; they're locals here.
Last up, we head underground for a 45-minute guided tour of Newdegate Cave. The cave sits at a constant 9°C so bring a warm layer. It's spacious with no narrow passages, though there are plenty of stairs. Your guide will walk you through the cave's history, geology and the remarkable formations that have been taking shape for millions of years.
We return to Hobart around 5.30 PM
