What you can expect
Embark on a tuk-tuk safari from Kandy to Sigiriya and explore Sri Lanka's cultural and natural treasures. Visit the Matale Hindu Temple, Dambulla Cave Temple, and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Opt for a wildlife safari in Minneriya National Park and a village safari in Hiriwadunna or nearby villages.
Start your adventure early from Kandy and visit the Matale Hindu Temple. Located in Matale, this colourful and intricately designed Hindu temple is a spiritual and architectural marvel. Dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, it features vibrant sculptures, towering gopurams (ornate entrance towers), and detailed artwork that depict Hindu deities and stories.
Engage your senses at a Herbal Cinnamon and Spice Garden, where you'll discover the aromatic wonders of Sri Lanka's spices. Immerse in a cultural culinary experience, unlocking the secrets of the island's rich flavours.
Proceed to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Perched on a hilltop, the temple complex consists of five caves adorned with over 150 Buddha statues and breathtaking wall and ceiling frescoes that date back over 2,000 years. The panoramic views from the summit add to the magical experience.
On the way to Sigiriya, opt for a wildlife safari in Minneriya National Park. These parks are famous for their large elephant gatherings, especially during the dry season. You may also spot other wildlife, including deer, peacocks, leopards, and a variety of bird species.
Experience traditional Sri Lankan village life by taking part in a village safari. This includes a bullock cart ride, a catamaran boat ride on a serene lake, and visiting local homes to learn about traditional cooking and crafts. Enjoy a freshly prepared village-style meal and interact with friendly locals, gaining insights into their rural lifestyle.
Visit the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Known as the “Lion Rock,” this ancient rock fortress rises nearly 200 metres above the surrounding plains. The climb to the top takes you past stunning frescoes, the Mirror Wall, and the Lion’s Gate. At the summit, you’ll find the ruins of King Kashyapa's palace and breathtaking 360-degree views of the lush greenery below.
For a quieter alternative to Sigiriya Rock, Pidurangala Rock offers an equally spectacular experience. The climb is slightly more challenging but rewarding, as the summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and an incredible vantage point of Sigiriya Rock itself. The site also features a reclining Buddha statue and remnants of an ancient monastery.
