Day 1: Lalibela
Upon arrival at Lalibela Airport, be transferred to your hotel before beginning an in-depth exploration of the UNESCO-listed rock-hewn churches. Carved directly from solid volcanic rock in the 12th century, these remarkable structures remain active places of worship today.
With a knowledgeable local guide, visit key churches including Bet Medhane Alem and the iconic St. George Church. In the evening, experience a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and learn about the spiritual significance of this sacred town.
Day 2: Lalibela to Semera
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight towards Ethiopia’s Afar region. As the landscape changes from green highlands to arid desert plains, notice the dramatic contrast in scenery and culture. Upon arrival in Semera, meet your Afar guide and receive a briefing about the Danakil Depression expedition.
The evening is free to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead while learning about Afar traditions and nomadic desert life.
Day 3: Semera to Erta Ale
Begin your journey into the Danakil Depression by 4x4 vehicle, driving across vast desert landscapes and ancient lava fields. After reaching the base of Erta Ale, one of the world’s few continuously active lava lake volcanoes, start a guided sunset trek to the crater rim.
Witness the glowing lava lake after dark, an unforgettable natural spectacle. Camp overnight near the volcano with basic but comfortable camping arrangements under the stars.
Day 4: Dallol
Early in the morning, travel towards Dallol, one of the most geologically unique places on Earth. Explore vibrant sulphur springs, mineral formations, and salt flats shaped by intense geothermal activity. Your guide will explain how tectonic forces have created this extraordinary landscape below sea level.
You may also encounter camel caravans transporting salt blocks, continuing a centuries-old trade tradition. The day concludes with travel towards the Lake Afdera area for overnight accommodation.
Day 5: Lake Afdera to Semera
After breakfast, visit Lake Afdera, a vast salt lake located in the heart of the Danakil Depression. Observe traditional salt mining activities and learn how local Afar communities extract and transport salt using manual techniques passed down through generations.
There may be an opportunity to relax briefly near natural hot springs before driving back to Semera in the afternoon. Enjoy a final evening in the Afar region reflecting on your desert expedition.
Day 6: Semera to Addis Ababa
Transfer to Semera Airport for your morning flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, you may be dropped off at Bole International Airport for your onward international departure or transferred to your hotel if extending your stay.
