Nestled in the beautiful Rhodope Mountains near Smolyan, the Canyon of the Waterfalls Nature Trail is one of Bulgaria’s most impressive eco trails. This circular route takes you through lush forests, alongside mountain streams, and past a series of spectacular waterfalls, making it an excellent choice for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers.
The trail is circular, allowing you to return to the starting point without retracing your steps. The hike typically takes 4–5 hours, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make along the way.
The trail is famous for its stunning waterfalls, with three of the most notable being the Cascades Waterfall, Orpheus Waterfall, and Heart Waterfall. Each waterfall has its own unique charm, and the sound of rushing water accompanies much of the journey through the canyon.
One of the most rewarding moments of the hike is reaching the panoramic viewpoint overlooking Smolyan. From here, enjoy breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding Rhodope landscape.
Unlike many popular tourist destinations, the Canyon of the Waterfalls remains relatively quiet. The trail offers a peaceful atmosphere where you can fully appreciate the sounds of nature, flowing water, and birdsong.
The trail is thoughtfully equipped with numerous wooden gazebos, picnic areas, benches for resting, and scenic viewpoints. These facilities make it easy to take breaks, enjoy a snack, or simply admire the surrounding scenery.
While the route is suitable for most hikers with moderate fitness levels, there are several steep sections where extra caution is required. Fortunately, much of the trail is equipped with safety railings and handrails that help you navigate more challenging terrain safely.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the trail is that there are several spots where you can approach the river and enjoy the cool mountain water up close. These peaceful riverside locations are perfect for taking photos or simply relaxing in nature.
