What you can expect

The experience begins with departure from the city of Praia towards the municipality of Assomada, on a journey that allows you to observe the landscape of the interior of the island of Santiago and understand the agricultural importance of the region. Along the way, the guide shares information about Cape Verdean eating habits, local products, and the link between the land and traditional cuisine. Upon arrival, participants take a tour of the local municipal market. They are then welcomed into a familiar and cosy atmosphere, typical of local homes, where they are introduced to the hosts and to traditional cuisine. The activity begins with the presentation of fresh ingredients, such as corn, beans, vegetables, and spices, explaining their origin, use, and symbolism in Cape Verdean cuisine. Afterwards, visitors actively participate in the preparation of the dishes, learning traditional techniques, cooking methods, and secrets handed down from generation to generation. Throughout the process, stories related to festivals, rural life, and family traditions are shared. The experience ends with sharing the prepared meal, in a moment of conviviality and cultural exchange, before returning to Praia, leaving participants with authentic memories and unforgettable flavours of Santiago.
